The Story: Laxmi Narayan Tripathi
The Story: Laxmi Narayan Tripathi
Hey there readers, Ish here, and Happy Pride Month to all of you. LGBT+ Pride Month is celebrated every year in June in the honor of the 1969 stonewall uprising in Manhattan. So to go with the tradition, The Teen Vogue is launching a new blog series "The story" to introduce the readers to famous personalities who support LGBT+.
The first one is none other than Laxmi Narayan Tripathi; actress, dancer, choreographer, and Transgender/Hijra rights activist.
Laxmi said that she was assigned a "male" gender when she was born, but she decided she did not want to be in the separate boxes of men and women as she grew up. As much as she enjoyed feminity, she had to face many problems related to it. When she was in college, she was scared that men would harass and bully her.
Laxmi later joined the transgender community or the Hijra community as she prefers to call it. She was shocked to see the reality of trans who would work so hard for daily food and shelter. At that time, she thanked her parents who did not disown her.
She also asked the supreme court to make a few laws in favor of transgender people. She said that these people were thrown from the mainstream 311 years ago and are still fighting to get back in.
Laxmi is also an author and writes books to create awareness towards the LGBT+ community. A few of her famous books are "Me Hijra, Me Laxmi" (Marathi), "Red Lipstick: The men in my life" (English), and more.
Laxmi, who was once looked down upon for being different than the others, is fighting hard so no one else experiences the same. Thank you Laxmi, for creating a new view in our society.
